The thing with aliens in movies/TV, is that they strongly resemble us – (mostly) four-limbed bipeds, or ‘humanoids’. I’m not convinced that alien life will always be as such. Thus I would probably say that Professor Hawking’s theories are more likely to be true, because they are based on reason, rather than the practicalities of animating them for the benefit of a TV camera!
I totally agree with Andrew here. Steven Hawking’s theory is actually based on scientific reasoning, whereas George and Gene wanted what would look best on camera! I’ve never been convinced by the idea of little green men living on another planet. I think we’re far more likely to find something that doesn’t resemble a human at all!
When you answer a question like this you would first need to hear all the theories and then see all the scientific evidence. Seeing that only hawking is a scientist than it would immediately put his idea in a strong position to be the best.
The possibility of there being another alien lifeform is a practical certainty. If the universe is infinite with an infinite number of planets there must be at least one other solar system which is similar to our solar system, with a planet similar to earth that would have developed the possibility of lifeforms.
In such a scenario the life form formed might be really different from what we are used to, remember evolution has created a number of strange organisms on Earth, who knows what it can come up with on a different planet.
Most alien invasion films feature a stereotypical tripod style of craft. Tripedalism is actually an incredibly ineffective form of traversing terrain, there are more likely to be quadrupedal aliens (If they even had legs) as it provides more stability.
