Question: what is your favorite project that has shown lots of colour?

Ooh… we did an experiment that involved synthesising a molecule called Azulene – a molecule which is a beautiful blue colour.
As you went through the synthesis, your starting material was a pale yellow; as you connected bits of the molecule together, each step went from pale yellow to red, to orange, to yellow/green, and then in the final step everything went to a horrid brown colour(!) – however this was purified using chromatography (the exact same principle as you may have used to separate ink using paper), and you saw the beautiful blue colour emerge from the horrid brown!
