I won two teaching awards in the last three years, and my students shortlisted me forward for an “outstanding innovation in teaching” award last year. While I didn’t win the innovation award, it is the students putting me forward that I value the most – it showed I made a difference.

My ‘outstanding innovation’ (if you can call it that) was doing something called “the flipped classroom” – it’s not a new idea, but it is new at this university. Basically I recorded my classes using a webcam at my desk, and asked the students to watch this before coming to the lecture. This meant that I could then spend the valuable ‘face time’ working through and solving problems. Essentially the “homework” became the class, and the class became the homework (hence “flipped”)

I won an award in my first year of my degree for being an “outstanding student”. It was basically because I got all A’s at A Level and answered all the questions very well when I was interviewed. Though I still cringe when I think about my answer to the question “where do you want to be in 5 years?” I replied with “anywhere but here” then realised how that sounded and told them that I wanted to be making a career for myself in industry in5 years after getting a brilliant degree! Little did I know that 7 years later I’d still be here!

Well, I won the best student in my course award for my undergrad, but I feel more honoured with the scholarships I got for my Masters and my PhDs, as I had stuffer competitions there.

Apart from that I have not won any major awards in science, maybe I can start with I’m a scientist 😛
