It all depends on who those friends are, if I know they like science as well I will enter my geek mode and buy them sciency gifts.

For family members, especially my nephews I tend to buy them gifts I would have wanted for myself when I was younger, and now that they are growing up I tend to buy them gifts where I can actually enjoy using as well, for example FIFA 14

I tend to buy people gifts that make me think “Ooh, the *very* thing!”, rather than go looking for something specific for them. There is no point buying people a “dragster made from junk you find around the house” unless they are interested in that kind of thing!

I wouldn’t buy it for them if it wasn’t a perfect match though. I think I must have felt out about 30 of the LEGO minifigure chemists though – loads of my friends got one of those from me!

To be fair, i buy-and give – such things for people even away from christmas. If it costs around £5, and it’s perfect, I’ll buy it at any time of year
