My favourite part of spectroscopy is that it tells you what you can’t see! As a synthetic chemist (one that does reactions to make new molecules) I would be lost without something like spectroscopy that tells me exactly what I have made!

In my experience spectroscopy is reliable, it will always tell you what you have made, what is in solution.

Experiments can go wrong, but spectroscopy never lies.

I love the theory of spectroscopy and how it allows you to interpret your results to realise truths about the molecule you have in your possession. Plus in spectroscopy we get to play with really cool bits of kit!

      Oh – and – COLOUR 😀

My favourite part is the vibrational spectroscopy bit – it is my specialty so I prefer it.

For me, I love any gas phase spectroscopy techniques. Solutions are fun and often easier to work with, but you never get the same level of detail that you do with gas phase techniques (molecules colliding with each other causes all sorts of complications and problems with your analysis.)
