Hopefully when you put 8.314 into a search engine you will have found something called “the gas constant” – that is what this number is. Every physical constant tends to have a letter symbol associated with it: e is the charge on an electron, the greek letter pi you will know as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The symbol for 8.314 is “R” – hence why it is a pirate’s *favourite* physical constant!
